|---|---|
| Total you deposit | ₹22.5 L · ₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years |

How the Sukanya Samriddhi (SSY) Calculator works
- Enter what you deposit in a financial year (between ₹250 and ₹1,50,000) and the girl's age when the account opens.
- Choose whether the money goes in once by 5 April or in twelve parts by the 5th of each month. Interest is earned on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month.
- Each month's interest is one twelfth of the yearly rate on that balance. The twelve amounts are added and credited on 31 March, so they earn interest from the next year.
- Deposits continue for 15 years. After that, nothing more is added, but the balance keeps compounding until year 21.
- The result shows the maturity value, your total deposits, the interest, and the balance when the girl turns 18, when part of it can be withdrawn for higher education.
How SSY interest is worked out
Monthly interest = lowest balance between the 5th and month-end × (annual rate ÷ 12)
Yearly interest = sum of the 12 monthly amounts, credited on 31 March
Deposits: years 1 to 15. Interest only: years 16 to 21.
Deposit by the 5th: it counts for that month. Deposit after the 5th: it counts from the next month. Assumptions and limits
- The rate stays at the value shown for all years. In reality the government resets the SSY rate every quarter, and the new rate applies to the whole balance.
- The yearly deposit is capped at ₹1,50,000 and should be at least ₹250 in each of the 15 deposit years. Amounts above the limit are ignored.
- Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, so a deposit after the 5th starts earning only from the next month.
- Deposits are assumed to be made on time every year from the first month of a financial year; opening the account part-way through a year lowers the first year's interest slightly.
- The balance at age 18 is shown for reference. The education withdrawal rule (up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year) and any early closure are not deducted from the result.
- SSY interest and the maturity amount are tax-free under current rules, and deposits may qualify for a deduction under the old tax regime. Confirm the latest rules before relying on this.
- The balance at age 18 assumes the account opens on 1 April when the girl is exactly the age you enter, so a real account reaches 18 part-way through a year. Deposits are in multiples of ₹50, and values are shown to the paisa while the post office credits whole rupees.
Frequently asked questions
How is the Sukanya Samriddhi maturity amount calculated?
Interest each month is the annual rate divided by 12, applied to the lowest balance between the 5th and month-end. The twelve amounts are credited on 31 March. You deposit for 15 years, and the account matures after 21 years. For example, ₹1,50,000 each April at 8.2% gives about ₹71.82 L.
What is the current Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana interest rate?
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana rate is 8.2% a year for Q3 FY2026-27, effective 1 October 2026. The Finance Ministry reviews small-savings rates every quarter, so the next change could come around 1 January 2027. The SSY rate floats, so the latest notified rate applies to the whole balance, not only to new deposits. We last checked this rate on 21 October 2026; confirm with India Post or your bank before you invest.
What is the minimum and maximum SSY deposit per year?
You must deposit at least ₹250 in each financial year during the deposit period, and the maximum is ₹1,50,000. If a year is missed, the account is treated as defaulted and a small penalty plus the minimum amount is needed to revive it, so check the current rules with your bank or post office.
Who can open a Sukanya Samriddhi account, and when does it mature?
A parent or legal guardian can open an account for a girl child who has not yet turned 10. Families can generally open one account per daughter, up to two daughters, with exceptions for twins or triplets. The account matures 21 years after it opens, or earlier on her marriage after 18 as per the rules.
Can I withdraw money from SSY before maturity?
Partly. Once the girl turns 18 or passes Class 10, up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year can be withdrawn for her higher education. Premature closure is allowed in limited cases, such as marriage after 18 or specified hardship. Check the current rules before planning around a withdrawal.
Is Sukanya Samriddhi interest tax-free?
Under current rules, interest on an SSY account and the amount received at maturity are tax-free, and deposits can be claimed under Section 80C (now section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025) if you choose the old tax regime. Tax rules change with each Budget, so confirm the latest position or ask a tax professional before relying on this.
What happens in the six years after deposits stop?
Deposits are needed only for the first 15 years. From year 16 to year 21, no new money is added, but the account keeps earning the scheme rate on the whole balance, and each year's interest is added to it. That is why the final balance is much larger than the total deposited.
