How the KVP Calculator works
- Enter the amount you invest (from ₹1,000, no upper limit).
- The government notifies the rate and the matching doubling period together. At 7.5% it is 115 months (9 years 7 months).
- At maturity you receive exactly twice the amount invested, in one payment. Nothing is paid out earlier.
- To show the growth along the way, the calculator finds the yearly rate that turns your money into double in that many months, and applies it year by year.
- If you try a different rate in the advanced options, the doubling period is recalculated from it and rounded to the nearest month.
Doubling period and implied yearly rate
Maturity value = 2 × P
Doubling period (months) = 12 × ln 2 ÷ ln(1 + r)
Implied yearly rate = 2^(12 ÷ months) − 1
P = amount invested, r = yearly rate as a decimal Assumptions and limits
- The doubling period and rate are as notified (115 months at 7.5% now). The rate and period are fixed on the date you buy and do not change later.
- The yearly values in the chart and table are an illustration at the implied yearly rate; KVP itself pays nothing until maturity.
- The calculation does not deduct tax. KVP interest is taxable and the investment does not qualify for a Section 80C (now section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025) deduction. Check current rules for your situation.
- A different rate in the advanced options is for comparison only; it does not match any notified KVP.
- Early encashment is not modelled. KVP can be cashed in after 2 years and 6 months at the notified premature values, which are lower than the yearly figures shown here.
Frequently asked questions
How many months does KVP take to double?
At the current notified rate of 7.5%, a Kisan Vikas Patra doubles in 115 months, which is 9 years 7 months. For example, ₹1,00,000 becomes ₹2,00,000. The government announces the doubling period together with the rate, so it can change for certificates bought in later quarters.
What is the current Kisan Vikas Patra interest rate?
The Kisan Vikas Patra rate is 7.5% a year for Q3 FY2026-27, effective 1 October 2026. The Finance Ministry reviews small-savings rates every quarter, so the next change could come around 1 January 2027. The rate and the 115-month doubling period are fixed for a certificate on the day you buy it. We last checked this rate on 21 October 2026; confirm with India Post or your bank before you invest.
What is the minimum and maximum investment in KVP?
The minimum is ₹1,000, and above that any amount in multiples of ₹100. There is no maximum limit. Large investments above specified amounts may need extra documents such as proof of income, so ask the post office what applies to you.
Is KVP interest taxable?
Yes. The interest on a Kisan Vikas Patra is taxable, and unlike PPF or NSC the investment does not qualify for a deduction under Section 80C (now section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025). How and when the interest is taxed can depend on how you account for it, so check the current rules or ask a tax professional.
Can I withdraw KVP before maturity?
Premature encashment is allowed only after a lock-in of about two and a half years, and the amount you receive is lower than the maturity value. Earlier encashment is permitted only in limited cases such as the holder's death. Check the current rules with the post office before buying if you may need the money early.
Is KVP better than a fixed deposit?
It depends on the rate and tax. KVP is government-backed and its rate is fixed for the full term, but it has a lock-in and no tax deduction. At 7.5% compounded yearly it equals a doubling in 9 years 7 months. Compare it with a bank FD of similar length using the FD calculator.
